Review ｜ Refinery ★★★★★
Refinery, located east of the Power Plant Mall in Makati, is yet another cafe that pops up on a lot of best of cafe lists in Manila. Like some other cafes in the Makati area, Refinery is a bit out of the way for typical tourist, unless you plan on going shopping in the Power Plant Mall. I had to make a special detour just to get out here during my second trip to the Philippines.
Refinery feels more like a formal sit down restaurant & bar than a cafe. So much so that I felt out of place going in a ordering just a coffee. While the staff didn’t do anything outright rude to me, the general atmosphere felt a bit unfriendly. I got the feeling that this place was for snobby, well to do locals, and not travelers passing through. The higher than average prices would also suggest this.
The menu have a few choices of beans you can choose from, which is always a nice touch. I ended up going with something dark roasted. The presentation was all well and good, but I felt the coffee was a bit thin, especially for a dark roast. On the plus side, they did put a big jug of water on my table, which I was happy to guzzle down.
I was a bit underwhelmed by the coffee and felt somewhat out of place here. I don’t I’ll return to this Refinery on future visits. With so many other amazing cafes in the Makati area, it’s better to go somewhere else.
