Review: St. George’s Church ★★★★★
St. George’s Church is one of the stand out attractions in Madaba. Perhaps it’s the main reason you should come to this sleep little offshoot of Amman, but I would argue that Madaba has several other merits.
Fair warning, the church itself is not really all that impressive, being that it’s less than 200 years ago. Rather, the attraction is what they found when they were constructing the church; the Madaba Mosaic Map.
The floor mosaic is a relic from the Byzantine era depicting the oldest known map of the holy land, i.e. Jordan, Israel, Palestine, and Egypt. Only a quarter of the floor map still survives, but it is indeed impressive. The map allegedly depicts where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist but I honestly don’t have the wherewithal to give any meaningful opinion on this. Suffice to say, photos don’t really do it justice. You simply have to see it person to drink it with you own eyes to truly appreciate it.
St. George’s is easy to get to, as it’s located right in the center of town. If you’re staying on the north side, this will probably be the first site you come across.
*Do note; this site is NOT covered by the Jordan Pass. That said, I will stress that it’s worth forking over the extra money to see this floor mosaic. It really is one of a kind.
