P. Burgos Street, or Padre Burgos Avenue, in Manila’s Makati area is packed with restaurants, bars, and excitement, as it is widely known as Manila’s more prominent red light district. There are areas around Manila that are much more inexpensive to drink in, but not many that are as a flashy and titillating.
P. Burgos Street won’t be to everyone’s liking, as it can have a little bit of a rough edge to it. But, if you’re interested in exploring the nightlife of the city, this is definitely the place to go. Many of the bars, but not all of them, are go-go bars, so you need to expect higher than average prices. Besides the bevy of bars, there are also a bunch of clubs in this area, both on P. Burgos Street and just off of it. On most nights you can see lines of twenty-somthings waiting to get in to these places. There are a plethora of places to eat, from the very pricey and flashy Filling Station Bar And Cafe, to street carts and hole in the wall places down back allies.
Rough Around The Edges, But Safe
P. Burgos Street has a reputation of being a rough place, but for the most part it’s pretty safe. I’ve walked around and photographed the area in the small hours of the day without any issues. I’ve seen a few fist fights that have spilled out onto the road and there are a lot of characters to seen hanging on the streets. For the most part, the area is well lit and there’s a lot of foot traffic. The alleyways can be dark a bit scary looking, but anyone sticking to the main roads shouldn’t have any issues.
Fun fact: The road is named after a martyred priest, Jose Burgos, who was executed nearby.
