Hotel Review | Hotel Asuncion ★★★★★
Hotel Asuncion is really something. I mean that in the worst way possible, just in case you’re unsure about the direction this review will be going in.
There are a lot of things to hate about this hotel. Like it being just far enough away from anything worthwhile in Laoag. Or that there is no working elevator in the hotel and carrying your bags up seven flights of stairs is really slog. Perhaps the hotel’s aging rooms and decor are depressing as all hell. Maybe it’s that staff is made up of the most useless people I have had the unfortunate pleasure of meeting. Yes, that last one, for sure.
Hotel Asuncion: Where The Staff Refused To Be Useful!
There were a lot of things the staff did that drove me nuts the few days I stayed. However I’m going to just highlight two experiences, both of which happened during my check in.
Ride or Die
One of the first things I inquired about when I got to the hotel was about renting a motorbike. Getting a bike in Laoag was really tricky, but the staff just curtly replied, ‘I don’t know.’ There wasn’t any, “I can check into that a little later for you,’ ‘I can ask someone else at the hotel for you,’ or ‘I can try making some phone calls to find out.’ Just, I can’t be bothered to help you. This really rubbed me the wrong way. I understand that quality of hotels and customer service in general is a lot lower than other places in Asia, but a little effort is expected.
The Breakfast Club
The other thing that happened was the woman doing my check-in was instant that I select my breakfast for the next morning and the time I would like to have it. I tried explaining several times that I wasn’t sure when I would be waking up and that missing breakfast would be fine. Our conversation when around in circles, arriving back at ‘what time do you want breakfast.’ She simply wouldn’t accept that I didn’t know what time I wanted to eat. I finally gave up and said that I didn’t want breakfast.
The next morning the staff was banging on my door at 7pm sharp with a tray of food. Apparently the lady who checked me in wrote a 7am breakfast request for me. I even had the ‘do not disturb’ sign on the door. I had been out drinking the night before, so someone pounding on my door in the early morning was definitely not welcomed. To say I was livid would be an understatement.
Avoid!
While I wouldn’t say the hotel is overly dirty, it’s aging AC units and outdated room decor make it feel like a flea trap. Add in the useless and lackluster staff and the outrageously high prices they expect (rooms are advertised for around $50 a night) on booking sites, and you get the picture why this isn’t a great place to stay.
Give this place a skip!
