Review | Dewil Valley Museum ★★

Dewil Valley Museum, the virtually unknown and grossly underrated sight, is located just about a half hour away from El Nido town. If you do make the trip out here, you’ll most likely be the only tourist visiting. The sight has 3 parts or attractions. The first is a small museum with artifacts discovered from that area, though nothing earth shattering. Beyond the museum there are some sculptress that dot the landscape, which are pretty cool to see. By far the most impressive thing to see, and the reason you should come here, is Ille Cave.

The cave has a number of rooms and natural stone formations that are just neat to see. As you might also assume, there are plenty of bats, which might freak some people out. The bats didn’t seem very interested in us, but you can see them on the ceiling and hear there through the cave.

Visitors do need a guide to visit the caves, for obvious safety reasons, and official guides (read our warning below) can be found at the museum, which is down the hill from the parking lot.

Our guide gave us helmets, took us through all the different rooms of the cave, which took over a half hour, took pictures of us, and was really happy to explain the significance of the cave and the excavation the university was doing in the area.

After seeing the cave he brought us back to the museum, where there is a donation box. He didn’t ask directly for a donation, but I was happy to give ₱200. Probably ₱50 per person is more than enough.

When we arrived we found two men stationed in a little pavilion near the parking lot. They informed us that we need to pay an entrance of ₱350 to visit the cave. I found this suspicious for a number of reasons, mainly because there wasn’t a price list hung anywhere but also because ₱350 is way to expensive for this type of sight in The Philippines. These guys looked really shady as well.

So, we told them we didn’t want to visit the cave and just wanted to go to the museum and that we would come back after that.

While exploring the museum, the caretaker popped in to greet us. I asked about the guys near the parking lot and he told me they were not affiliated with the sight and were just ripping people off.
