Hotel Review | U Hotels Makati

U Hotels Makati, located in the north end of Makati just outside of the P. Burgos Street area, was a great find. One would assume that a hotel located so close to one of Manila’s most notorious red light districts would be unkempt and uncouth. Quite the opposite, as U Hotels is quite chic.

A Lot To Love

Breakfast Offerings at El Mundo Cafe; In the Lobby of U Hotels Makati (G. McGregor/ https://pawprintphoto.net)

Truly, there’s a lot to like here. The hotel is very clean and modern looking. The staff is incredibly nice and helpful, going out of their way several times to assist me. It’s surprisingly quiet, as it’s just far enough away from P. Burgos Street and the bars to be a nice little sanctuary from all that madness. The amenities were adequate, especially nowadays when hotels don’t even give you a toothbrush. The WiFi worked well and was fast enough for me to video conference for work.

The price is also a good deal, especially if you book through a third party app. I found Agoda to be offering the cheapest prices for this particular hotel. The hotel’s website (linked below) does offer seasonal promos, so make sure you check those out before booking. There also a member’s card which gives free room upgrades and other discounts. While the card is free, it was a major hassle to get one. I spent months communicating with the staff through e-mail. The long short of it, they said my card would be waiting for me at check-in. It wasn’t. I did eventually get the card, and I have been given an upgrade every time. So, it was worth the trouble.

There is a restaurant located in the lobby, El Mundo Cafe. I did get a chance to eat there, and the food is just ok. Considering the price, I think it’s better to skip eat here. Rather, head out to one of the many restaurants around the Makati area, like Commune. They do offer free water from a cooler, which is nice.

What’s Not To Love

Manila’s Red Light District; In Front of the Maison on P. Burgos Street (G. McGregor/ https://pawprintphoto.net)

The location is great if you’re looking to stay in an area with a lot of bars and restaurants. Makati is not for everyone. As mentioned, P. Burgos Street is a red light district. If you never walk south of the hotel, you probably won’t know it’s there.

On the negative side, rooms are a little on the small side. Rooms can feel dark, and windows are small and lookout to walls. In fact, some rooms don’t have a window at all.

Would We Stay Again

Not only would we book this hotel again, we have. We’ve actually stayed here more than a half dozen times. It doesn’t hurt that it’s also very close to our favorite cafe, Commune. We like being close to nightlife and having lots of options for places to eat. We’re not bothered very much by red light districts, but we do like the places we sleep to be quiet. The overwhelming positives of U Hotels Makati greatly overshadow the few things that we didn’t like.
