Review | Saints Peter and Paul ★★★★★
Saints Peter and Paul Parish Church is a hidden gem in Makati. On the north end of P. Burgos Street, beyond the gogo bars and ladyboys, sits this handsome church. Built by the Spaniards in the 1600s, but sadly destroyed during the British occupation of Manila in 1762. The church was reconstructed almost a hundred years later in 1849. That’s the structure that still stands today.
The church is located a little off the P. Burgos Street and the tiny street that leads to its doors is gated and locked at night, so it feel a bit hidden and inaccessible. I probably passed by a few dozen times before I decided to drop in. If you’re staying U Hotels Makati, which is my go to hotel, you’ll practically be right next door, making this an easy church to visit.
If you liked the outside of the church, you’ll love the inside, which is very ornate and well crafted. One of the best church interiors I’ve seen in the Philippines. It’s also air conditioned, making it a great place to plop into to relax for a spell. There’s a small room off to the right side that houses some of the church’s treasures, so make sure to pop your head in there before leaving.
Everything can be seen in fifteen minutes, but some might want to relax here a bit longer to take in all the finer details. Cameras and Smartphones are allowed, which is nice. It goes without saying, but please avoid visiting the church during masses.
