Review | National Museum of Anthropology

The National Museum of Anthropology is another fantastic museum in the Intramuros area, located just across the street from the National Museum of Fine Arts.

Like the Museum of Fine Arts, I hadn’t actually read anything about this museum and only decided to pop in when I noticed it when I got to the area.

While it’s not as impressive as the fine art museum, which simply comes down to a matter of personal taste, I still found this museum very enjoyable. The history of the architecture is the same as the National Museum of Fine Arts, so I won’t repeat it here. However, the facade at the anthropology museum seems to be in desperate need of repair.

The entry procedure is also the the same; as of my visit in 2023, the museum does require a vaccine check at the door. For tourist, you should have a QR code. Locals should have some kind of health card. Masks are also required, though I did see a many who ditched them once inside. Because of these requirements, patrons end up bottle-necked at the entrance in long lines. On a weekend, expect a thirty-minute wait. Unfortunate, there is little cover from the afternoon sun, so bring a hat.

Anthropology in the Philippines

A View From Above as Patrons File Through (G. McGregor/ https://pawprintphoto.net)

Expect a great a varied collection of jewelry, clothing, ancient weapons, wood and stone carvings, and even a full size ship.

Most of the works old, but there appeared to be some modern wood carving on display in what I assume is a temporary exhibition.

Depending on your level of interest, one can easily spend between two to four hours wandering around here.
