Review | National Museum of Fine Arts ★★★★★
The National Museum of Fine Arts, or simply the National Museum, is a surprisingly fantastic museum in the Intramuros area. I actually hadn’t read anything about the museum and decided go simply to make the most of a day in Manila.
Having no expectations, I was surprised to see the size and style of the building. It’s huge and it’s neoclassical design is quite eye fetching. Built in the early 20th century, most of the original building was destroyed in WWII and subsequently rebuilt in 1949.
As of my visit in 2023, the museum does require a vaccine check at the door. For tourist, you should have a QR code. Locals should have some kind of health card. Masks are also required, though I did see a many who ditched them once inside. Because of these requirements, patrons end up bottle-necked at the entrance in long lines. On a weekend, expect a thirty-minute wait. Unfortunate, there is little cover from the afternoon sun, so bring a hat.
Some Great Pieces of Art
There’s a bit of everything here for art lovers, from classical pieces to modern art.
There are a large number of sculptures throughout the museum, ranging from the 18th century to present day works.
There are some wall-sized paintings, include some massive ones of Ferdinand Magellan in the first hall near the entrance. The death of Magellan is common theme throughout the museum. I actually didn’t know that Magellan was killed by ingenious locals in the Philippines, so I was thrilled to get the history lesson.
