Review | Fort Santiago ★★

Fort Santiago, nestled right in the north tip of Intramuros, is probably the most prominent sight inside the famed walled city. Built built by the Spaniards in 1571, ravaged and mostly leveled in WWII, what’s left is just a shell of it’s former self. While there are some impressive sections still intact, like the outer gate, you really need to look at the fort with the right kind of eyes to see what was there. As well, the history of the fort is very heavy, so don’t expect an uplifting afternoon here.

Since Manila is so short on historical sights, Fort Santiago gets a high place on the list by default. Considering it doesn’t take much effort to get to the fort while exploring Intramuros, it’s an obvious stop because of that. Just don’t set your expectations too high or expect any great photo opportunities. Plan to spend an hour or two exploring.
