Review: Deeds ★★★★★
Located just off the north bank of the Sai gawa, this hidden café is a coffee lover’s paradise. Deeds (ディーズ) most certainly is a haunt for locals in the know, rather than for visitors of Kanazawa. Their location is quite a bit off the tourist trail, so you really have to be one of those people that seek out the best cup of coffee a city has to offer.
The java on tap is well worth the effort, especially if you plan on taking beans home with you. At any given time they have at least 25 different varieties of beans to choose from. Better still, they only roast the beans after they’ve been ordered, guaranteeing maximum freshness. They’ll even roast to your specific instructions, if you think you know better than they do.
The second floor hosts a sit-down area where you can enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee. What’s always stood out here was that they offer real cream with their coffee. A nice touch that is too much of a rarity in Japan, though it’s starting to become more common.
Menus are only in Japanese, and the staff only speaks Japanese. Ordering coffee on second floor is done by choosing a bean variety, rather than style. Because of this, their offerings change frequently. So it’s not going to be as simple as ordering a latte, unfortunately. They have some cakes on offer, as well.
Direct To Your Door
For residents in the land of the rising sun, they will ship freshly roasted beans right to your door. As of 2021 they finally implemented a full online shop. Hooray! In the past you needed to call them to arrange an order. Glad to see they are getting with the times.
If you’re unsure of what you want, you can still call them and order by phone. Simply tell them what style of beans and/or type of coffee you like and they should be able to give some thoughtful recommendations. They have in-house blends as well, which are nothing short of spectacular. Ask for their Opera (オペラ) blend. It’s officially on their menu only in February/March, but we haven’t had any issues ordering at other times of the year.
