Scam | Bedouin Romance

The Bedouin Romance scam is something all travelers to Petra and Wadi Rum should be aware of. Scammers usually target solo female travelers. They will target pairs of female travelers and even couples from time to time. The scam isolates the victim so the perpetrator can sexually assault.

Don’t think that it can’t or won’t happen to you. The first line of defense is learning all about how this scam works so you can protect yourself.

How It Works

The Bedouin Romance scam starts innocently enough. A flirtatious Bedouin man will approach their target. They might say they want to practice their English or something along that line. After building some trust they offer something a little more alluring, like a free tour. They will make promises of seeing candlelit caves and spin tales of the starry dessert sky. It sounds like an adventure come true to see Petra after the tourists have gone, to have meals with this new friend and his family, and seeing the real Bedouin lifestyle.

Once you have been separated from the crowd and all alone things won’t end well. Most victims talk about being tricked into eating food laced with drugs. Others have said they were outright assaulted and raped.

How to Avoid The Bedouin Romance Scam

No matter how charming someone appears to be, don’t put yourself in a vulnerable position. Don’t go off to secluded locations with someone you have just met. Don’t accept food or drinks that you have not seen come out of a sealed package.

Lastly, don’t accept any offers to stay overnight in Petra. This is actually illegal to do.

Only hire authorized guides in Wadi Rum.

If you have fallen victim to this scam, you should report it to the authorities. However, the prosecution procedure is quite lengthy in Jordan. Tourist don’t stay around long enough for real justice to happen. This is a loophole I’m sure these Bedouin rapists are aware of and are exploiting.
