Review: Real Bedouin Experience ★★★★★
Right off the bat, I will tell you that Real Bedouin Experience Tours & Camp is offering an experience that is more natural and outdoors. No tents, no showers, just you and Wadi Rum, at least back in 2017 this is what it was. It does seem that they now mostly run typical tours, which if I’m being honest, is a bit disappointing. The typical campsites are pretty lame and overly sanitized. Not to mention overly wasteful of things like water. If you’re going out to Wadi Rum, this is not what you should be going for. Fortunately, they still have their ‘under the stars’ option. It’s 20JD extra, but this is the only way to do Wadi Rum justice.
Why Settle for 5 Stars….
….when you have a million right above you?
Of course, if sleeping under the stars doesn’t sound attractive to you, you can do it in a tent. I just strongly feel that experience is far more enhanced when you’re not being coddled. Go big, or just go home. Or something like that.
Our Real Bedouin Experience Guide
Our guide was Salem Nasser. It was just him, us, and a jeep. He was a great guide and taught us many things on our 2 day/2 night tour. He would find herbs and natural ingredients in the desert and make natural teas. That was the kind of experience he gave us.
As for what we did; we were taken our private campsite, which was really in the middle of nowhere. No other visitors around. We couldn’t even hear any other people. It was entirely secluded. Salem took us to see the sunset. After it got dark we headed back to camp and ate dinner.
Day 01: Real Bedouin Experience
On the first ‘proper’ day it was all the usual sites, like Lawrence Springs, blah blah blah. This was actually the least interesting part. We would occasionally run into some other tourists, but surprisingly that didn’t happen too often. Usually people were leaving as we were coming or vice versa. Anyway, if you’ve been to the desert you’ve seen sights like this already. We ended the day by going to a different area to catch the sun set. Then back to camp for another homemade dinner.
Day 02: Real Bedouin Experience
The second day was filled with longer hikes, which were more interesting. These hikes were amazing. We saw sea fossils, and some really great views right into Saudi Arabia. Even more amazing, we didn’t see a single other tourists.
We also rode camels. This was not as fun as I hoped. It was actually quite painful. I regret doing a 2 hour ride. If you really must, limit it to one hour. Honestly, I think after 10 minutes most people will have had their fill.
The best part of the experience was nighttime; seeing all the stars. This was truly unforgettable. Not being in a tent really made this experience what it was and why I highly recommend going with this company.
By the end you’ll be stinky, a little sun burnt, dirty, and tired, but it’s also the only way to be a responsible visitor to the area. Remember, there isn’t much water Wadi Rum.
A Super Supper
Nasser was a great cook, by the way. We were really happy with all the meals. From breakfast, to lunch to dinner, he put a lot of effort in. It was much appreciated, and delicious. His dinners were so good that other locals in Wadi Rum would drop to eat with us.
