Review: Popeye Beer Club ★★★★★
Popeye Beer Club is probably the premier destination for sampling Japanese craft beer. With over 70 beers on tap, they have the largest, and arguably best, selection of craft beer in Japan. Being that this is Tokyo, prices are on high end. Expect to pay around ¥1,000 per pint, which is par for the course in Japan. That being said, with their selection it’s easy to drop a good chunk of change on a night out here.
Popeye does have a number of generous deals to help lower the price. Top of the list is their happy hour deal, which runs from 5pm to 8pm every night. On select pints/half pints, you will receive a half plate of food. This is the only good reason, ever, to order half pints. The food is typical bar fare, pizza, fried chicken, etc.. It’s nothing life changing, but passable for the inebriated.
As you might expect, the bar is incredibly crowded every night. Reservations are a must, unless you want to show up after 9pm. After happy hour, the bar does tend to clear out a bit. The inside is non-smoking, which is fantastic, but it does get really warm in there. During happy hour, it’s hard to move around. Also expect some wait time for staff to fill orders. Be proactive and order when you still have a half drink left.
Outside of their happy hour food offerings, they do have a few choice food options. We really like their baked Alaska. They also do potato crisps, like in house potato chip.
Membership
If you live in the Tokyo area, you can become a member. Members get a discount card which can be applied for a percentage off your bill. Members also get postcards in the mail every month that net them free drinks. If you’re with a group of 3 or more, this would be a beer tower full of craft beer. That’s an amazing freebee!
