Finding Where the Gas Cap is Located
You’ve rented a car and spent the last few hours cruising around carefree. It’s time to gas up, so you pull into the next petrol station. As you pull into the lot you have the dreadful realization that you don’t actually know which side of the car houses the gas cap. There’s already a car behind you waiting for you to drive in further. You’ve got a 50/50 shot of getting it right. You take a chance and pull up to the gas pump. You jump out of the car and realized you blew it… again!
The Bane of Rental Cars
This has happened to us more times that we would care to remember in a rental. We have spent the last decade of our driving-life in rentals and borrowed vehicles. More often than not we have forgotten to check the gas tank’s location when renting a car. This makes sense as we are always more focused on checking the vehicle for damage. This totally makes sense, as the location of the gas cap is pretty trivial compared to potentially being charged for damage we missing during the inspection. We have even reminded each other about checking, but to no avail. It never fails to slip our minds.
Well, good news. There is no reason you should ever have trouble knowing where the gas cap is located ever again. Ironically it’s something we’ve probably stared at millions of time. On the car’s gas gauge, next to the icon of the gas pump, there will be an arrow. The arrow points to the side of the car where you find your gas tank. If it’s pointing left, the gas tank is on the left side of the car. If it’s pointing right, it’s on that side. It’s very simple, but oh so helpful.
