Review | Islas

Islas is the new sister restaurant of Pineapple Coast. In fact, they are right next to each other. Much like its sister, this is an upscale dinning establishment, and with that comes some elevated cost. That’s not really an issue if the quality is there.

I did really want to dine in Islas, so as to get the full experience, but apparently the whole place was booked out for a party. They ended up seating me at next-door at Pineapple Coast, which was fine. Both restaurants are fairly tiny with limited seating.

As per usual, the staff is really nice and everyone in both restaurants has an excellent command of England and incredible professionalism.

Sitting over at Pineapple Coast waiting for my meal, I started to notice the upkeep was lacking. Bulbs burnt out and not replaced. A few scrapes here and there. A lot of these small cosmetic things really start to subtract from the overall experience. Ordinarily in the Philippines I wouldn’t care so much, but these places really are billed as top tier dining and are far above the typical cost. So, I have a much higher expectation about the upkeep. Plus, I dinned there just a year ago and things seemed to be in much better shape.

The other things that rubbed me the wrong way were the lack of WiFi, which if I weren’t dining alone would have bothered me, and that both restaurants still don’t take credit cards. Again, this is a top tier place with prices to match. I thinking being able to pay by credit card isn’t too much to ask for. Since I limit the amount of cash I walk around with, it restricted what I could order.

As for the food, I did enjoy what I had. It’s a completely different style from Pineapple Coast, which is great. I appreciate that the owner is trying different things.
