Review | B 1 Area ★★

The infamous B 1 area in Laoag, an area none seem to talk about. I wouldn’t have known it even existed if I didn’t happen upon some locals that took me there on whim after leaving the District 01 SuperClub. You could accurately describe the area as a red light district, but it’s a bit more than that. The area has a fair number bars, super cheap restaurants, a racetrack, and probably a few other shady things hidden spread over two streets.

The area is super shady, so caution would be advised. Go into the wrong place and you might get seriously ripped off. As mentioned, I only ended up here because I was some locals that took me around and knew the lay of the land. All that said, it’s a really fun area, and everything is super cheap. I ate a meal for ₱60 and San Miguel bottles weren’t much than that. I did karaoke in a few bars, and it was just ₱5 a song. What a deal.

It is a red light area, so there are escorts around. None of the bars I was in were really aggressive about it. They asked if I wanted someone to sit with me. I said ‘no’ and they never pushed the issue.

I did take a look at the area during the day to shoot some photos, and I noticed a bunch of bars were opened in the early afternoon. The racetrack was also hopping, so it seems like you can drop into this area at time for drink, or something more.

Finding B 1

If you want to make it to the area on your own, it’s just south of the Partas Bus Terminal. From the main road, go just west of the station and take the road south about 250m, There will find Discolandia road heading westbound. It’s a good bet that you’ll see a group of tricycle drivers hanging out on the corner waiting for customers. Discolandia loops around like a horseshoe, so it’s pretty much like two roads.

Fair warning, the road from the bus terminal is dark and scary looking at night. Most sane people probably wouldn’t venture down it alone at night. With these direction, you should be able direct a tricycle driver there in the case they have no idea what you’re talking about when asking to go to B 1.

Why It’s Called B 1

B 1 might seem like a strange name for the area. I didn’t think much about it at the time, as I was leaving D 01 (District 01 SuperClub). That said, I decided to put a little more research into the name while writing this review.

The letter B is short for Brgy., which in turn is short for barangay, sometimes called a barrio. If your Spanish is rusty, a barrio is a neighborhood. Based on that, I would assume that it got the nickname as this used to be the first barrio of the city or B 1.
