While St. George’s Church gets most of the attention, deservedly, the archaeological park in Madaba is also very worthy of your time. Seeing how you’ve made the effort to come to Madaba, you should definitely have this site on your itinerary.
The area has opened Roman roads you can walk on and a covered compound that houses the oldest floor mosaics you can find in Jordan. This highlight for us was the Hippolytus Hall, which dates from the Byzantine era, around 6th century. Right next to it is the Church of the Virgin Mary, which is also really impressive to see.
The floor mosaics and roped off, however if you are with a guide you might be able to get a little closer to them. I saw a guide lift the ropes for a couple when we were there, so I can say for sure that it does happen. I suppose this depends on the guide, how much of a tip they think they get from you, and who’s around at the time.
Expect to spend about an hour here walking around, exploring the park, and examining the mosaics. It is by far the largest attraction in the city and has the most to offer.
The park is easy to get to, as it’s located right in the center of town. It’s only a block east of St. Gregor’s Church, so it’s really easy to get see after or before the church.
