Review | Walking Street ★★★★★
Walking Street, which is actually named Fields Avenue, is the main entertainment pub in Angeles City. Not to split hairs, but it is the center of the city, even if that isn’t geographically correct or something that locals would abhor. It’s no secret that the area is a thinly veiled red light district that caters to foreign tourist, especially Koreans.
That said, there is more than just a flesh trade going on here; for example there are some bars which are just regular bars, like the outstanding GAZUA Beer Garage. On the east end of the street, there are two or so alleyways with street eateries offering mostly Filipino food. It’s a great place to drop for a bite to eat after having a few drinks. You’ll also find hotels, money changes, litigate massage parlors, like Yeoung Yeoung Massage, convenience stores, drug stores, and so on, all packed into and around this little area. All that being said, sex is still what’s mainly on sale here. As one might imagine, this street is here for some nights of debauchery, so you best leave your inhibitions at home.
To what might a disappointment to some, the area is not that big. The street stretched for 350m. While there are bars on some back roads and side streets, this is the main area where most of the action is. I suspect that before Covid Walking Street used to be far more active, however while I was there in 2023 it seemed pretty tired and out of energy, hence the three start rating.
What To Expect on Walking Street
No matter what time of day, you will find a place to drink and chat up some local working girls. Even though it’s called Walking Street, it is opened to traffic during the day. Around sunset is when the road closes down and the area really comes alive.
There are plenty of touts walking around hawking penis pills and god knows what else, as well as bunch of freelance woman offering to go back to your room for a “massage,” the area is not as shady as one would imagine. Those elements can be super annoying, especially the touts, but they are easy enough to ignore.
Every bar has bouncers at the door keeping riffraffs at bay, as well as there being a huge police presence on the road. Multiple offers are stationed at both ends of the road, as well as some that are walking the beat. It’s not really a good place to pull any crap.
As for advice of which bars to hit, I get the feeling that ownership changes fairly frequent, so what was good in the past might not be so good in the future. Most every bar here seems to be on the level, especially with the huge police presence in the area. So, you don’t really see bars padding the bill, adding a suspiciously high cover charge, or making up mysterious charges. You should always be on your guard, and the further you get away from Walling Street, the more common some of these scams might become.
